The much-awaited draw of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations was successfully held in Cameroon host country, with exciting results. The event took place on Tuesday, 17 August.
Some African football legends present at the Yaounde Conference Center, rated the chances of success for their respective countries. The teams were drawn into six groups as follows; Group A (Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Cape Verde), Group B (Senegal, Zimbabwe, Guinea, Malawi), Group C (Morocco, Ghana, Comoros, Gabon), Group D (Nigeria, Egypt, Sudan, Guinea Bissau), Group E (Algeria, Sierra Leone, Equatorial Guinea, Ivory Coast), and Group F (Tunisia, Mali, Mauritania, Gambia).
Samuel Etoo commented about Cameroon, saying that they have a very good group and an excellent coach, but pointed out that what is left to tackle is the management of pressure “in front of about 26 to 27 million Cameroonians, I hope that the young teammates will manage the pressure very well” the former Indomitable Lion stated. Enganamouit re-echoed the point, adding that it would be good if the trophy stayed at home.
Ivory Coast, in the same group as defending Champions Algeria, was considered fit to move to the next stage by Didier Drogba. He also said going as far as winning the title in Cameroon, would be difficult.
For Asamoah Gyan who equally spoke after the draw, his country Ghana is hoping for nothing but a trophy “It’s been quite frustrating, since 2008. We’ve always been coming closer to the cup but we don’t get it. I think back home, everybody wants nothing but a cup. It doesn’t matter about the performance, it’s about the cup. That’s what we’re praying for” Gyan said.
Ahead of the tournament to run from 9 January to 6 February 2022, each of the 24 participating countries are now aware of their various groups. The playgrounds to host the pools include; Olembe-Yaounde (Group A), Bafoussam (Group B), Mfandena-Yaounde (Group C), Garoua (Group D), Japoma-Douala (Group E), Limbe (Group F).
