Cameroon have qualified for the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies AFCON 2021, after defeating a resilient Comoros side 2-1.
Toko Ekambi opened scores for the Indomitable Lions in the 29th minute and Vincent Aboubakar later made it two, as he raised his number of goals in the current tournament to six.
Their lead did not deter the focus of 10-man Comoros as the Coelacanths kept on with several attempts to score. Their efforts finally resulted in Youssouf Changama’s goal in the 81st minute.
Even though the Comorians did not win, their performance at the Olembe Stadium definitely surpassed expectations of the home side.
At the start of the match, all seemed to be in disfavor of the Islanders, from the Covid complications to the red card Nadjim Abdou was shown seven minutes into the game. This appeared to have rather boosted their play, as they came close to holding Cameroon to a 2-2 draw at full time.
Conceicao and his boys’ victory makes it four teams that have qualified for the quarter-finals. The three others include Tunisia, Burkina Faso and Gambia.
