Lionel Messi has officially said goodbye to FC Barcelona where he has played for 21 years. The Argentine said joining PSG is a possibility but that nothing has been agreed yet.
When his departure was announced on 5 August, speculations had tipped Paris Saint Germain and Manchester City as the main clubs in close talks to acquire the player. While confirming his exit from Barca, he stated “It is a possibility, but I have not agreed anything with anyone. I have got different clubs interested. Nothing is definitive but clearly we are talking to them” Lionel Messi disclosed.
“I don’t want to leave this club – It’s the club I love and this is the moment I didn’t expect.” the 34-year old added.
He said he can’t stay with the club due to La Liga restrictions “I offered to reduce my salary to 50 percent and they didn’t ask me for anything else. I only know that it was not possible because of La Liga, because the club did not want to go into more debt”.
Barcelona president is reported to have mentioned that trying to keep Messi, could put the club at risk for 50 years. The player regrets that this is happening at the time he had made up his mind to stay with the club “last year I wanted to leave, this year I wanted to stay” he said.
Since joining Barca and making his first-team debut in October 2004 aged 17, Lionel Messi has won 34 trophies with the club and scored 672 goals in 778 games. With all of this success so far, the six-time Ballon d’ Or winner says he still wants to play his last years winning more titles.
