Breaking News: French citizens elect Macron as new President

French voters have chosen Emmanuel Macron their next president after an unpredictable campaign and the close of the second round of election which opened in metropolitan France on Sunday.

According to Sky News reports, The centrist candidate won more than 60% of the vote, comfortably beating far-right candidate Marine Le Pen, to become the country’s youngest ever leader.

Figures from the country’s Interior Ministry said 65.30% of voters had cast ballots by 5pm local time, a drop on the level seen at the same stage in 2012 and 2007.

Mr Macron’s victory will be welcomed in European capitals in the wake of a populist tide that has seen Britain vote for Brexit and the US elect Donald Trump.

But Ms Le Pen’s share of the vote is likely to be around double what her party scored the last time it reached the second round in 2002, a sign of the disaffection with mainstream politics in France.
