Cameroon’s Minister of Secondary Education Nalova Lyonga has frowned at school authorities who dismiss students confirmed to be pregnant in their establishments.
Dr Nalova said the practice is against the government policy of keeping all students in school without discrimination. “It is also contrary to the government’s policy of promoting gender equality and preventing the dismissal of vulnerable students. It has caused girls to drop out of school” she added.
She instructed that a student confirmed to be pregnant should be allowed to continue with school activities until the 26th week of pregnancy, after which she may request to be placed on maternity leave.
The Minister further indicated that the students should be authorized to return to school after giving birth, provided health, work, and disciplinary requirements are met.
She said the same measures should be applied to the author of the pregnancy, if he is a student.
However, in the case where a teacher or staff member is responsible, “appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken against them”.
