A scheme has been set up by stakeholders of the Wouri Division, Urban council authorities and other partners to enable inhabitants to better manage plastic waste. A plan detailing the implementation of the scheme was adopted during a working session on July 28.
The Divisional Delegate for Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development in Wouri, Lemnyuy William, said “there is a committee that we will set up at the urban council which will be following up the people who are doing the collection and making sure that they are doing it at the right place and that the plastic waste being collected is paid for” he stated.
It was revealed that target waste production areas such as schools and markets shall be identified and collectors assigned with specific target quantities, that will be handed over to recyclers and with some compensation paid.
Betatinz gathered that some of the collectors and recyclers, have set up software systems to facilitate their work, and enable the population to have access to what is happening in the plastic waste management chain.
