Gabon’s military leader gives up presidential salary

The interim leader of the military junta in Gabon, Brice Oligui Nguema, has renounced his salary as president.

His spokesperson Col Ulrich Manfoumbi, made the announcement in a statement which indicated that he will only receive a wage as commander of the republican guard.

The junta ousted former president Ali Bongo in August, on the basis of corruption allegations and other financial scandals.

The new leader took the oath of office in September and has since effected several changes, including the slashing of allowances for lawmakers and stopping political funds.

His policies have been applauded by several Gabonese.
