PI-CAR-B is the name of Yannick Edouard Mekongo’s robot which has made his fellow Cameroonians inspired and proud of him, after presenting it to the public on his return from France where he had gone to further his studies.
The 23-year-old’s invention is able to do voice and face detection, as well as follow instructions given to it. For example, if the robot is told “Right” it follows the right-hand direction. It is also able to sense an obstacle in front of it then change direction while following with precision, the path indicated to it.
According to Yannick, what led him to where he is today is determination which he wants to prove that it never goes in vain “The message that I have come to pass is that what the others are doing, we can also do. For me some years ago, I could not imagine doing this” he said.
The opportunity he got to study abroad was as a result of his top position in class at IAI Cameroon in the second year. Having spent three years already furthering his studies in France, he thought it wise to come to his country and present what he had been working on.
The young engineer has pointed out that the project, which is at 80 percent of execution, will help in security surveillance, medicine and agriculture sectors, as well as assisting the visually impaired.
