Joel Matip bids farewell to Liverpool

Joel Matip will be parting ways with Liverpool in one of the most emotional moments of the club in years.

The 32-year-old Cameroonian’s departure was announced by the club on Friday, May 17, after an eight-year spell.

His achievements with the club include winning the Champions League, Premier League, Carabao Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and Community Shield.

Matip has been considered “one of the best free transfers ever”. He joined the Reds in 2016 from Schalke, on a free transfer. He worked his way to the top ranks of the club’s history, and will be leaving as one of the best defenders.

In 201 appearances, he scored 11 goals and gave 6 assists.

“I am full of gratitude for the wonderful time I was able to experience with these unique people supporting the club and the fans who love Liverpool FC” Matip said.

“My wife and I have felt welcomed and supported from day one and together with the kids we had the best imaginable time here. We will always keep it in special memories” he added.

Jurgen Klopp will also be stepping down as coach of the club after over eight seasons.
