The killing of Deborah Samuel Yakubu by some Muslim students of her school Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, on Thursday, has widely been condemned by Muslims and Christians across Nigeria.
The female Christian student was stoned and burnt to death after being accused of making posts in a WhatsApp group, which her killers considered insulting to Prophet Muhammad.
The Nigerian Christian Association has announced in a release that they will organize a nationwide protest on May 22, to raise awareness about the incident, and intensify calls for her murderers to be prosecuted.
“The protest will…take place in every Secretariat of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) nationwide, and not on the streets in order to avoid further loss of lives” the Christian Association said in a statement.
It is worth noting that following the incident on Thursday, two suspects were arrested. This further provoked a group of Muslims in the northwestern city of Sokoto to riot. They demonstrated against the arrests, asking State authorities to stop further investigation into the issue, residents of the area said.
All of this is happening at a time when presidential elections are approaching. Nigeria’s current President Muhammadu Buhari reacted in a statement saying “No person has the right to take the law into his or her own hands in this country. Violence has and never will solve any problem.”
