As part of attempts by the government to end the persisting strike by some secondary school teachers in Cameroon, President Paul Biya ordered the disbursement of 2.7 billion FCFA on Monday 7 March, for the payment of money owed the educators.
In the message communicated by Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh, Minister of State Secretary-General at the Presidency of the Republic, it was indicated that “the money will serve as payment of arrears owed to teachers who took part in the marking of official examinations organized by the Cameroon Baccalaureate Board for the June sessions of 2020 and 2021,” a section of the document bearing Paul Biya’s instructions read.
This move doesn’t seem to be yielding any immediate results.
The representatives of the protesting teachers had indicated that they expected to be officially called for a meeting with State authorities, where their concerns would be thoroughly discussed.
It is worth recalling that the Prime Minister had organized a meeting to seek solutions on March 1, but the teacher representatives said they weren’t aware of it, thus calling for an appropriate procedure to be followed.
They have been striking for three weeks now, with students especially those of examination classes, directly affected.
