Antonio Guterres during a two-day visit to Nigeria, has urged international donors not to divert all resources of their humanitarian activities to Ukraine. He said they shouldn’t forget other crisis.
His first stop in Nigeria was the Borno state known as the birthplace of the jihadist group Boko Haram.
He met with the Borno state governor, Babagana Zulum in the capital Maiduguri, before embarking on a field mission where he had to meet families affected by the Boko Haram conflict, ravaging the region for more than twelve years.
The Secretary-General appealed to humanitarian groups not to undermine their efforts in other places around the world like in Nigeria, because of donations they are making for the Ukrainian crisis.
Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari said the visit by the UN chief was an assurance that Africa had not been forgotten despite the global attention on the war in Ukraine.
Antonio Guterres visited Nigeria for the first time since his appointment. The visit was part of his annual Ramadan solidarity visits to nations.
