The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), has revealed that Cameroon is one of the countries in the world receiving the highest number of refugees. Raouf Mazu said they are about half a million in number.
He was granted an audience by Cameroon’s Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute, on Wednesday 8 September. The High Commissioner said his visit to the Star building was to salute the efforts of Cameroon in helping persons fleeing violence from different countries. He also said he was impressed with the strategies laid down to ensure social inclusion of the refugees and their access to services of the UNHCR.
“We spoke about the repatriation of some refugees who are here in Cameroon back to their countries of origin, voluntarily of course, and also about the possibility for some Cameroonians who have had to cross into Nigeria or Chad, to come back” Raouf Mazu commented of his meeting with PM Dion Ngute.
The High Commissioner reaffirmed their support to the government and the readiness to provide the necessary aid for the protection and assistance of the refugees in Cameroon.
The UNHCR fact sheet indicates that Cameroon currently hosts over 455,000 refugees as well as asylum seekers and internally displaced persons.
