US president Donald Trump fires FBI director James Comey

Donald Trump has fired FBI director James Comey, over his handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails.

The Trump campaign is currently being investigated by the FBI over allegations that it colluded with Russia to influence the outcome of the election, and the sudden dismissal of the man in charge of investigating the Trump campaign’s connections with Russia, is highly suspicious.

The US president said in a letter to Mr Comey that he was “not able to effectively lead the bureau”.

“While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the judgment of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the bureau,” The telegraph quotes Mr Trump as saying.

“It is essential that we find new leadership for the FBI that restores public trust and confidence in its vital law enforcement mission,” he added.

Some Democrats compared Trump’s move to the “Saturday Night Massacre” of 1973, in which President Richard Nixon fired an independent special prosecutor investigating the Watergate scandal.

White House officials have denied allegations that there was any political motive in the move by Trump, who took office on 20 January..
