Activities marking the celebration of the 2021 World Habitat Day on October 4, have included a call for collaboration between the private and public sectors. The Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN–Habitat), has said she believes in partnerships as she encouraged the co-existence between the State and the population.
The UN-Habitat Executive Director, Ms. Maimunah Mohd Sharif, underscored the urgent need for public-private population partnership, as a major means through which Cameroon can succeed in its urban drive. She gave the advice October 3, during a discussion session with local authorities organized by the Special Council Support Fund for Mutual Assistance, a day before the commemoration of the world habitat day.
“I always believe in partnership…it can be the government, the private sector, Public-Private people partnership. We always have many plans. We always have many strategies to translate the plan into action” Maimunah Mohd Sharif said.
Statistics indicate that Cameroon has an urban growth rate of 34 percent, with about 72 percent of the urban population in the country living in slums under very precarious conditions.
World Habitat Day is the UN initiative that is aimed at promoting the basic right to adequate shelter and housing for everyone in a world which is densely populated, and has been affected by the impact of urbanization.
