Labour Minister urges employers to review salaries of domestic workers

The Minister of Labour and Social Security, Gregoire Owona, has called on employers to take into consideration, the improvement of the working conditions of domestic workers.

Gregoire Owona made the call in his labour day speech of May 1, 2024, celebrated under the theme: “Constructive social dialogue: Vector of decent work and social progress”.

He highlighted the need for the salaries of domestic workers to be valorised. He said it falls in line with the government’s determination to continue improving the working environment of employees in the country.

The minister indicated that his ministry has programmed sensitisation campaigns to raise awareness on the role domestic workers play.

According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), domestic workers are among the lowest-paid and one of the most informal groups of employees. The ILO notes that they are often excluded from minimum wage protection.
